The rider Glaucus Valery conspires against the emperor Nero, but an attempt to assassinate Caesar during his vacation in a villa in Capua fails. The prefect of the Praetorians, Tigelinus, who is pursuing the conspirators, discovers free gladiators heading to Rome, led by the lanist Rezius. Mistaking them for conspirators, he arrests the travelers. Nero sentences the “criminals” who appeared before his eyes to death in the arena. But the unwitting culprit of the misfortunes of the gladiators, Glaucus decides to save them. Friends manage to deceive the guards and escape.
