BBFC Ratings info
BOYZ N THE HOOD is a 1991 US drama about three young men living in their deprived, crime-ridden Los Angeles neighbourhood. Language: There is frequent strong language ('f**k', 'motherf**ker'), with milder bad language including uses of 'dick', 'ho' and 'bitch'. Violence: There are scenes of strong violence in which characters are gunned down in the course of rival gang warfare, or shot in cold blood when they are unable to defend themselves. Bullet impacts result in bloodshed, and there is also sight of extensive bloody injury detail in the aftermath of violent events. Sex: There are strong, crude references to female genitalia and various sexual activities, including oral sex which is offered by a woman who is desperate to obtain drugs. There are also brief sex scenes featuring nudity, thrusting and a woman moving on top of a man. Drugs: There is sight of drug deals being made in the street and a drug-addicted woman holding a crack pipe as she moves unsteadily and slurs her words. There are also scenes of threat as members of a gang, who are riding in cars, fire weapons in the air and cause a crowd to scatter. There are also numerous uses of the term 'nigger', which are exchanged between black characters.

Sex & Nudity

moderate

Some shirtless men are seen in a locker room with towels around their waists A boy says "I put my ding-a-ling in her every night so that makes her mine!" There is tons of sexual references and jokes made in this movie. (Deleted. Personal opinions about suitable viewing ages are not appropriate for the Parents Guide.) Several conversations among teen boys about "getting p*ssy", "f*ingering hos", "sucking titties" etc. Sex scene with brief bare breasts. Very sensual and done with class. A sexual conversation between Tre and his father mentioning virginity and condoms

Violence & Gore

moderate

A man fires a gun at an intruder, but the bullet just goes through a door. A woman tells her child not to get smart with her because she'll "knock (his) ass out". In one scene, there is a young boy walking home, and in the background you can see a beatdown behind him. A few young men are shot with machine guns in a drive-by. We see some blood on one of the young men as he is killed point blank (off screen) while begging for his life. The killing is shown off screen, as we only see one character's face, shooting the gun to end his life. We see a slightly bloody dead body. Guns are pulled in a few scenes and used to threaten people. Shots are sometimes heard being fired in the distance. Ricky is killed by a shotgun in a drive-by shooting. We see a very large, bloody wound afterwards for an ample amount of time.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

severe

A very emotional film. There is an intense scene where a cop holds a gun to a man's throat We see a group of friends mourning their pal's death. There is a scene depicting a family completely falling apart at the sight of their dead son/brother/father's bloody dead body. Very realistic, intense, disturbing and above all extremely emotional.
